Try a Taster Day
Curious about sailing? Spend a day on the Solent with us before you decide whether to join. No experience necessary — our qualified skipper and crew will look after you from start to finish.
What to expect
You’ll join a scheduled trip on one of our yachts from Mercury Marina on the River Hamble. A typical day might include sailing across to the Isle of Wight, anchoring for lunch in a quiet bay, and returning in the afternoon. You’ll be encouraged to get involved as much or as little as you like — take the helm, trim a sail, or just enjoy the ride.
You’ll sail with a commercially qualified skipper and experienced crew, so you’re in safe hands throughout.
Practical details
- Cost: Just the standard member sailing fee (£56 summer / £41 winter) — no temporary membership surcharge for taster days
- When: Taster days run in the spring and summer months (typically May–October, when sea temperatures allow)
- Duration: A full day, usually departing mid-morning and returning late afternoon
- What to bring: Warm layers, waterproofs if you have them, non-marking shoes with grip, and something for lunch. We’ll sort the rest.
- Location: Mercury Marina, Hamble, near Southampton (SO31 4HQ for sat nav)
How to book a taster day
Getting on the water is easy:
- Email us at generalenquiries@soyc.co.uk to let us know you’re interested
- We’ll send you a short form to fill in and match you to an upcoming trip
- Turn up at the marina and enjoy your day
- If you loved it, joining is simple - and your taster fee is offset against your first year’s membership
